Good communication is the foundation of any successful relationship, be it personal or professional. Our non-verbal communication - our facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice - that speak the loudest. However, the way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately is determined by our culture, gender or age. One aspect of culture which is greatly affected by the advent of technology is the way of interaction and communication.

It is true that technology in recent years has altered the path that people communication with each other. I strongly believe that technology has greatly affected on our verbal or non-verbal interaction with our family, friends and even our colleagues.

During Chinese New Year celebration, different generations gather together to celebrate the festival. I noticed that my cousins around my age always look at their smart phone rather than chatting to each others. They completely ignored what is going on around them. One of my relatives was talking to my youngest cousin,  and my youngest cousin rarely makes eye contact when speaking to my relative. My relative was very angry and scolded her for showing disrespect and unwilling to pay any attention in the conversion. In my family's culture, we need to make an eye contact when talking or even listening to show a respect. On the other hand, my parents and my relatives were not looking their smartphones all the time. They were happily chit chatting.

In conclusion, technology has been negatively affecting many aspects of human life including the way people interact with one another. In the long term,   much of our human life experience maybe communicated through our smartphones rather than face to face.

  1. Thank you, YaWen, for sharing with us your thoughts on how communication is changing across generations. The example you give from your family's Chinese New Year interactions is very telling (as is the photograph). Is there anyway to avoid such an "obsession" with technology?

Here are a few other comments and questions, related to language use:

    a) You wrote:

"However, the way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines our culture, gender or age difference."

I think you mean to write that "... the way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately IS DETERMINED by our culture, gender or age."

    Do you see the difference?

    2) One of the culture which greatly affected by the advent of technology is the way of interaction and communication.

    3) A good communication >>> Good communication (communication is a non-count noun, so you cannot use "a")

    4) has greatly affect >>> has greatly affected

    5) They totally completely ignoring... >>> ? (check the verb form)

    6) One of my relatives was talking to my youngest cousin, my youngest cousin rarely makes eye contact when speaking to my relative. >>>
(run on sentence: Please see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/598/02/ )

    7) On the other hand, my parents and my relatives were making eye contact and facial expressions in their communication. >>> (use of wrong transition phrase)

    8) In my conclusion >>> In conclusion

    9) ...technology has been negative affecting many aspects of human life including the way people interact one another. >>>
technology has been negativeLY (word form) affecting many aspects of human life including the way people interact WITH (collocation) one another.

    10) In the long term, our human life will be communicate through our smart phone rather than face to face. >>>

Please don't let my own "obsession" with your language use eclipse the what I feel you did well in this post as you provide some insights into communication style. I look forward to your next post.

  2. One note of clarification, YaWen. You need to tell me whose posts you have commented on, not who commented on your posts.

  3. Hi YaWen, this phenomenon has become a natural and there is even a term to describe it : Phubbing. Gone were the days where we would go playground and interact with other children, now chidlren are playing games on the ipad or mobile phones. This seem to harm the way we communicate to people alot and I wonder if our future generation will become an anti-social society?

  4. Hello Ya Wen, thank you for sharing your chinese new year experience with me. I agree that technology has affect us negatively in communication. I would suggest that if you encounter similar situation, you can emphasize to your cousins to treasure the opportunity to interact and communicate as chinese new year is only once a year.

  5. Hi Yawen,
I fairly enjoyed reading your post as it is something that I think everybody observed but just thought it was not important. Even I am guilty of using my phone while talking to other people. With that conclusion of technology being the cause of the distractions and lesser face-to-face conversations. How do you supposed that we can improve and prevent these type of situation from happening?

    cheers,
    Angela :)
